Count the wedding couples in the hilltop village of Oia and you will understand why this is known as the Greek "Island of love". It's seriously high on the romance Richter scale with its old-world charm. Oia is a postcard-perfect patchwork of white and pastel hotels clinging to the cliff 300m above the Aegean Sea.
By day, hire a car and drive south to Eros beach. Hidden at the end of a dirt track, you will find a secluded black volcanic sand bay and the cool jazz beats of the Theros Wave Bar. On the way, stop off at the ancient village of Pyrgos, set around the ruins of a medieval castle. Give your glutes a workout climbing the narrow streets to the top for a panoramic view of the island.
By night, watching the famed sunset at the tip of Oia is a must or head to Perivolos for beachside dinner. Drink sundowners in a boat-turned-sofa on the sand, then head inside for fresh local fish with an Asian twist.
Santorini's volcanic eruption 3600 years ago cased tsunami that devastated the northern shores of Crete, more than 100 kilometres away, and led to the collapse of the island's Minoan civilisation.
